TRNHow did you become interested in coaching?
Viviana Saccone: I was always very restless. I always liked to read a lot and I liked psychology. Many times I tried to study. At one point I even started a career, but because of work I could not finish it and this year, when I had a little more time, I started to look for what I could do, what I could study and I found the career of coach. I did not have it very present, but I started to investigate, to see what it was about and I found it exciting.
I discovered a wonderful world where I even realized that all those things I had been researching, reading and being interested in had a very strong connection with what coaching is. I discovered something that I am passionate about, that puts you at the service of others, in addition to everything it does for you, everything that helps you. I found a beautiful profession.
Would you say that coaching changed your life?
Yes, coaching has changed my life a lot. It is a path that is just beginning and it will change it even more. Everyone works on themselves, so it's like doing an intensive therapy for years in months. Then, it makes you live with a full consciousness, it gives you full consciousness about a lot of things, about things that we human beings have (usually) in automatic in our lives and we don't ask ourselves. It is the science of questioning. It makes you live with a lot of awareness of what you think, what you feel.
I am very careful now. I take care of my thoughts. Living consciously makes you the architect of your life and that changes your destiny.
What is the difference between ontological coaching and psychotherapy?
Both coaching and psychotherapy have a single objective, which is the change of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that are not being beneficial for the person. One of the differences is that while coaching works on the "today", from today to the future and works on the "what for", psychotherapy works on the whole spectrum.
Psychotherapy goes to the past, the future and today. Coaching never goes to the past, it works from today forward. A psychotherapist has a university training in psychology and coaching is a technique. The therapist is empowered to suggest behavioral changes, alternative thinking, give opinions and make comments based on mental health competencies. The coach does not give you an opinion at all. The coach does not diagnose, does not treat, and does not address mental disorders.
The coach does not suggest or tell the client what to do. It is based only on questions and all the answers are given by the coach. In the training as a coach we receive information on how to detect signs of mental disorders and, in that case, to be able to refer to a professional. The coach does not make diagnoses.
It is possible to do a coaching process and therapy simultaneously, but only if the therapist is informed and asked for permission. In case the client wants to do both, therapy has priority. If the therapist agrees, he/she gives a kind of permission and the coach can also work with that person.
Moreover, in a coaching process the relationship is symmetrical. The coach and the client declare themselves in the same place. The coach asks questions, declaring ignorance based on what the person brings to work on, and from there a symmetrical relationship is created. On the other hand, the relationship between a patient and a therapist is asymmetrical because one goes to a person he/she considers an authority. Therefore, that person can even tell you what you have to do or what you should do.
How can ontological coaching improve our lives?
Through the questions the coach asks, he enlightens the client. With this process, the client can begin to discover resources and strengths that maybe he did not know he had and, starting to see them, he can modify all those things he wants in his life. All these questions are asked with the objective of accompanying, to change the way the client looks at the things or the things that prevent him/her from moving forward. You can change the perspective or beliefs that you have to achieve that "I want" that the person is looking for. It is essential that he/she is clear about what he/she wants.
Are all profiles suitable to receive the advice of a coach?
It is important to emphasize that a coach does NOT advise. That can be done by a consultant or a psychotherapist, but a coach does NOT advise, but accompanies and accompanies by asking questions, questions based on what the client brings to work on. This goes hand in hand with the first question of the interview. There are some profiles that cannot be coached, which are for therapy. For example, addictions, grief, post-traumatic stress, anxiety, panic, phobias, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, bipolar disorder and depression, among others.
What goals does coaching help you achieve?
Coaching helps you achieve any goal. Any goal that is logically achievable. This does not certify that you are going to achieve it because it depends on many factors, including what the individual decides to do with these tools. But when a person comes to a coaching session because they want to change something in their life that is not comfortable, pleasant and they want to make a quantum leap to another place and they are clear about what that other place is, coaching can help.
Can the coaching you are going to offer be implemented in all aspects of life (personal and work decisions)?
Yes, coaching can be implemented in all aspects of life, whether personal or work-related, and it can also be implemented in matters that have to do with companies. There is a type of executive coaching, to which I also want to dedicate myself.
